Woe Ye Hypocrites

Joshua Van Oostrom

A hypocrite can be defined as one who says one thing but their actions or inactions reveal a much different intention. The most obvious examples of such a person in today’s world are 90% of government officials, leaders of “non-profits” who work closely with corrupt governments, and the liberal left.

Let us first look at ourselves, however, to remove the beams out of our own eyes. Do we blame others for our mistakes? Or find ways to remove our responsibility from the equation? Are there things that could be improved upon in our own lives that would prevent future errors? If the answer to that last question is yes, (Hint: If you are honest with yourself and God, it will be) then we should not be quick to cast judgement on anyone but ourselves. This does not mean that we should ignore the realities of the world around us.

In Matthew chapter 23, Jesus calls the “teachers” of God’s law hypocrites. Not once, not twice, but eight times. They had become blind to the will of God by pursuing self-righteousness for the sake of personal satisfaction. They sought after wealth and prestige, believing God had granted them these things because they were “holy.” They cast away the poor, the sick, and the dying because of their sins. They claimed to know scripture but killed the Son of God whom was prophesied to come and die by their hands.

In every sense of the word, they were hypocrites. If we profess to know the Lord through speech, let our actions express His love. His love is beautiful and all-knowing. There is nothing like it in all the world. It feeds the hungry, heals the sick, clothes the naked, and touches the hearts of all (even hypocrites). I am a hypocrite because I write these words as a sinner. I require God’s mercy every day of my life. Woe to the hypocrites who cannot admit to themselves this truth and may the Lord wash them with regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost.

Bible verses for you

Titus 1:15-16

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Matthew 23:13

But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

1 John 4:20

If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

A Heart that Knows God

There is very little that one can know. When we compare our knowledge to that of our Father’s, it is impossible for us to scratch the surface here on earth.
